National FFA Week was celebrated by FFA members nationwide from February 18-26, 2021. The Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter was very active throughout FFA Week.
To start out the celebration, we hosted a Blacklight student dance for all 7th-12th graders on Friday, February 18 which was followed by an overnight lock-in for 55 High School FFA members.
During the next week, there were dress-up days for K-12 students and staff each day along with an emblem hunt. Dress up days included: Western Wednesday, Hat Day, and Blue and Gold Day. Students got a chance to win Best Dressed for the day. We also had an Emblem Hunt where we hid a FFA emblem each day and put a clue in the announcements. The student who found the emblem first got a FFA box of popcorn.
The Elementary students, as well as staff, got to participate in the FFA Week Coloring contests. All together there were 216 participants at St. Mary’s and Sleepy Eye Public. Winners received FFA T-shirts, cups, popcorn, cinch bags, and more. The elementary winning coloring pages are displayed in the Ag. Hallway along with numerous other decorations.
On Thursday, we held an appreciation breakfast where our officers made egg bakes and prepared fruit for the breakfast. All Sleepy Eye Public staff, Ag. advisory board members, school board members, administration, and top-level supporters were invited to the breakfast.
Friday was a favorite for the entire school with the Animal Carnival being held. The purpose of the Animal Carnival was to inform and educate the pre-K through 6th graders of Sleepy Eye Public and the St. Mary’s 3rd graders about where their food and fiber comes from. This event provided an opportunity for the students to see and pet eight different types of farm animals and learn about them.
Our sponsors for the Animal Carnival included: Dean Evers- lambs, Chris Richert- goats, Rosenhammer’s- Holstein calf, Portner’s- Brown Swiss calf, Schwartz Farms- piglets, Hacker’s- llamas, and Ellen Windschitl- rabbit. We appreciate them sharing their animals with us for the day.
The week’s activities ended with an officer bonding activity in an escape room adventure. National FFA Week is a time to celebrate the organization that we love and appreciate so much as well as all it has taught us. We had a great time involving everyone in the school in our activities.
