Help Wanted: Police Officer

Job Description: The City of Sleepy Eye (3,400) is seeking a full-time Patrol Officer. Firearms Instructor, Use of Force Instructor, and/or Evidence Tech positions are open to be filled by new applicants. The Sleepy Eye Police Department will pay training costs to certify Officers in these positions.  Applicants that are not POST eligible because they are currently in a Skills program are strongly encouraged to apply. The Sleepy Eye Police Department will hire Skills students to a CSO position and assist in training students for future Patrol Duty while preparing for the POST License Test. The Sleepy Eye Police Department is part of the LELS Union. The Police labor contract will be renegotiated in 2025.

The Department Officers work 10-hour shifts, our new hire will predominantly work night hours reducing the stress of true rotation. The Sleepy Eye Police Department employs one Investigator with five Patrol Officers. The Police Department recognizes 14 holidays which can be used for days off or taken for pay. If any part of a holiday is worked the entire 10-hour shift is paid out at 2 ½ times pay. Officers receive a $700 yearly uniform allowance. Upon retirement with the Sleepy Eye Police Department 100% of an Officers sick bank is deposited in a MN state retirement health savings plan. Officers can bank a total of 968 sick hours (max deposit in 2024 is $36,454.88). The City of Sleepy Eye matches 1% of the Officer’s total salary a year into a deferred comp bank. Low-cost premium health care insurance is provided by the city, a single person will pay a $50 premium a month.
