Two of five Minnesota households have dangerous levels of radon, an odorless, colorless gas that can cause lung cancer. Brown County Public Health says that over 70% of households that were tested for radon had elevated levels. Radon comes through the soil around homes and seeps through sealed cracks in basement floors and walls. If radon is detected in your home, a licensed professional can install a system to reduce radon concentrations. Homes should be tested at least every five years. Brown County is offering free radon test kits at Brown County Public Health in New Ulm and at the Sleepy Eye, Springfield and Comfrey city halls. Test kits are also available at Nicollet County Health and human services in St. Peter and North Mankato. You can also purchase a test kit at www.mn.radon.com.
