Community Education Update 3/4

Literacy Night will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 5-7 p.m. in the Sleepy Eye Elementary School building. All children to sixth grade are invited to participate in the activities that are being planned. The activities will be focused on reading which is an important skill for children to attain. ECFE promotes reading to children every day to increase their vocabulary. At first, you may just point to a picture and use one or two words. As they grow, add more detail and depending on how many times you read a book, they will be able to tell you the story on their own while you listen. Elementary children keep logs of their reading each week and receive rewards at the end of the week such as more time outside when it is nice.

There are other ways to build a child’s vocabulary such as singing or chanting songs, playing “I Spy”, saying the letters to us that are on their cereal boxes and just talking with children about how their day went or what they learned.

Early registration is open for preschools at this time. Discovery Time is for three year olds and meets 78 days during the year. Voluntary PreK is for four year olds and their meet 140 days for the year. State law requires a child be 3 or 4 by September 1 to determine the class they would be enrolled in. St. Mary’s Catholic School and Grace Lutheran School offer preschool opportunities for both ages as well.

Some of the activities on the March calendar include:

ECFE class for all ages meets on Tuesdays, 4:30-6 p.m.
