Community Education Update 3/10
Registration for Defensive Driving classes for those 55 and older has gone well. The first offering will be Thursday, March 20, at 1 p.m. Classes are all scheduled for four hours and include those needing a renewal class as well as those who need the first time class. The change is a result of the update to the Accident Prevention Course Rule approved by the 2024 state legislature. The majority of people 55 and over have had a driver’s training course as teenagers so it was deemed the four-hour refresher class would be sufficient. Participating in the class every three years provides a ten per cent discount on vehicle insurance.
Future classes are on Tuesday, April 15 at 5 p.m. and Monday, May 12 at 1 p.m. All classes are held at the Sleepy Eye High School.
One more opportunity is available for those wanting to spend a day at quilting class this winter. It will be held on Saturday, March 22 beginning at 8 a.m. Attendees bring their own supplies, a sewing machine and a food item to share at noon. All skill levels are invited to participate.
Early registration is open for preschools at this time. Discovery Time is for three year olds and meets 78 days during the year. Voluntary PreK is for four year olds and their meet 140 days for the year. State law requires a child be 3 or 4 by September 1 to determine the class they would be enrolled in. St. Mary’s Catholic School and Grace Lutheran School offer preschool opportunities for both ages as well.
ECFE open gym will be on Saturday, March 15, 9:30-11 a.m. in the Sleepy Eye Elementary gym. It is a time for preschoolers to use some of their large muscles for the activities that are planned.
The Community Education Advisory Board will be meeting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 in Room 109 at the Sleepy Eye High School.
