The Sleepy Eye 7th grade boys’ basketball team will be playing in the Target Center Sunday, July 23, in the Pacesetter Great Five-State Championships.
The “Great State” playoff system includes Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The 7th grade boys’ tournament Sunday will include Medford (WI), Brooking
Games will begin with pool play starting at 8:30 a.m. at Maple Grove Middle School. The championship bracket will move to the Target Center at 2:10 p.m. with all teams guaranteed to play at minimum one game on the main floor.
All players, coaches and spectators will be attending the Minnesota Lynx game on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against the Las Vegas Aces as part of the weekend experience, which is coordinated in cooperation with the Lynx/Timberwolves.
Sleepy Eye qualified through Pacesetter’s 8-region playoff system for grades 4-9 that began in March and advanced to the Pacesetter Minnesota youth state championships played at St. Ben’s in June.

The St. Mary’s 5th grade boys basketball team won the Sleepy Eye Tournament on February 5th to finish off an undefeated season. Team members include Jalen Brandl, Adam Braulick, Nolan Kucera, Tommy Schwartz, Landon Plotz, Cooper Walter, Mason Mathiowetz, Alex Armbruster and Max Wagner. Coach Rob Brandl.
The Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 5th Grade boys won their first two tournaments. The Knights beat Tracy to win the Championship on January 8th to win the Springfield Elementary Tournament and went 3-0 in the St. Mary’s tournament on January 14th with wins over Cathedral, Springfield and St. Paul’s Lutheran. Team members included Adam Braulick, Jalen Brandl, Nolan Kucera, Landon Plotz, Tommy Schwarz, Cooper Walter, Grady Folkens, Mason Krzmarzick, Jack Balko and Miles Pelzel. Coach Rob Brandl
Former Sleepy Eye football coach Dean Deibele made an appearance September 23 at a practice of the newly formed Sleepy Eye United Youth Football team. Dean was a stand-out athlete, teacher and coach at Sleepy Eye High School. He coached the 1995 and 1996 section football runner-up teams, as well as the 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2005 section championship / state tournament teams. He was the head coach for Sleepy Eye’s only state football championship team in 2000.
Dean also was an assistant coach on the 2000 Sleepy Eye Indians State Championship baseball squad. And, was a player on the 1976 Sleepy Eye Indians state baseball runner-up team.
He currently resides in Chanhassen with his wife Chris.
