BLUE EARTH – St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral senior girls’ runner Clare Fischer took first at the Section 2A Cross-Country Meet at Riverside Town & Country Golf Club on Friday, earning herself a trip to the state meet.
The state meet for both girls’ and boys’ runners is on Nov. 6 at St. Olaf College.
St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/NUC’s Elle Kyllonen also had a strong race, finishing 15th overall with a time of 21:58.09. GFW also had Ashley Vos (22:54.10, 27th) and Abigail Willegal (23:17.95, 30th) finish in the top 30 girls’ runners.
The Lester Prairie and St. James Area girls’ teams finished first and second, respectively, on Friday to earn trips to the state meet.
Qualifying for the state meet from the area boys was Madelia/Truman/GHEC/Martin Luther freshman Josiah Demaris, who finished seventh at the section meet on Friday with a time of 17:23.89.
St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/NUC’s Noah Christensen turned in a strong time also, finishing 17th with a time of 18:32.40. Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Donovan Witte took 28th on Friday with a time of 18:54.87.
The SJA and Mankato Loyola/Cleveland boys’ teams finished first and second at the section meet, respectively, earning trips to state in the process.

Former Sleepy Eye football coach Dean Deibele made an appearance September 23 at a practice of the newly formed Sleepy Eye United Youth Football team. Dean was a stand-out athlete, teacher and coach at Sleepy Eye High School. He coached the 1995 and 1996 section football runner-up teams, as well as the 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2005 section championship / state tournament teams. He was the head coach for Sleepy Eye’s only state football championship team in 2000.
Dean also was an assistant coach on the 2000 Sleepy Eye Indians State Championship baseball squad. And, was a player on the 1976 Sleepy Eye Indians state baseball runner-up team.
He currently resides in Chanhassen with his wife Chris.

- 19 Student athletes attended the State Trapshooting Tournament in Alexandria June 18th, 2021, attending was Hayden Zarn, Spencer Hoffman, Riley Strate, Brayden Suess, Jacob Schultz, Jake Price, Mark Anderson, Winsten Nienhaus, Carter Swenstad, Josh Sellner, Jade Sellner, Alexa Pelzel, Emma Fischer, Taylor Berkner, Julia Berkner, Chloe Dolly, Sam Price, Noah Rossbach and Dallas Brazle
- Each athlete shot 100 rounds
- Athletes were divided into varsity, jr. varsity and novice based on their season average, as well as male and female
- Top 2 Varsity shooters were Hayden Zarn with a 92/100 & Spencer Hoffman with an 89/100
- Top 2 male Jr. Varsity shooters were Jake Price with an 87/100 & Jacob Schultz with an 83/100
- Top 2 female Novice shooters were Alexa Pelzel with an 82/100 & Jade Sellner with an 71/100
- Top 2 male Novice shooters were Carter Swenstad with a 79/100 & Noah Rossbach with a 55/100
- Our Novice team overall (both male & female) placed 3rd and received a trophy
- It was a great overall experience for all athletes and coaches
- Sam Price also did the honors of singing the National Anthem in the opening ceremonies
