The Indians played a smothering defense, wearing down St. Mary’s for a 54-39 win in the Subsection championship contest played . Monday night at GAC in St. Peter. Sleepy Eye avenged their lost last season to the Knights in the same title game.
Sleepy Eye was lead by Kadence Hesse with 26 points, 13 rebounds. Brea Mertz had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assist and 3 steals, Cadence Okerman had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assist, Jazzibelle Martinez had 6 points.
St. Mary’s season ends with a 22-7 record
Sleepy Eye High School junior Evan Thompson competed in the State Wresting Tournament. He lost his first match, won two in the consolation bracket before falling. He finished in 6th place. Evan competes with the New Ulm Area team.

Sleepy Eye High School gave a rousing send off to Evan Thompson as he headed off to the State Wrestling Tournament. He was escorted out of town by a fire truck. Evan will compete in the 285 lb weight class beginning March 3rd.
Evan Thompson a student at Sleepy Eye High School finished the Section 3AA wrestling meet as the 285 pound runner-up. He will now advance to the state tournament with a 44-4 mark. Wyatt Pollard, a St. Mary’s student finished 6th at 170 pounds. He concludes his season with a 28-20 record. Both wrestle with the New Ulm High School program- see results below.
The Knights of Columbus District Free Throw Championship was held in Sleepy Eye on Sunday February 19. Boys and Girls age 9 to 14 who had previously won their council events took 25 shots each. The winners will advance to the Regional Championship on March 5 in New Ulm. Boys: Age 14 Eli Christensen; Age 13 Isaac Christensen; Age 12 Landry Folkens; Age 11 Gavin Hillesheim; Age 10 Alex Armbruster; age 9 Aaron Finstad.
Girls: Age 14 Brylee Hansen; Age 13 Brynne Ibberson; Age 12 Brynne Wilfahrt; Age 11 Cendyll Daub; Age 10 Stella Schieffert; Age 9 Evelyn Weier.
Kadence Hesse surpassed the 2000 career point mark February 20th. She is the first player in Sleepy Eye High School basketball history to reach the milestone. Kadence is only a junior.

Kadence Hesse poured in 34 points Monday night to help Sleepy Eye beat St. Mary’s 64-55 and in the process became the All-Time Scoring leading for the Sleepy Eye Girls Basketball program, surpassing Madison Heiderscheidt. Hesse now has 1700 points and counting as she is only a junior.
