Boyd Huppert’s, KARE 11’s weekly “Land of 10,000 Stories” segment, 100th Emmy of his famous journalism career has arrived at the Sleepy Eye Depot Museum and will now be permanently displayed at our local history center.
The Emmy, awarded by the National Academy of Television Arts, was earned for Huppert’s feature called the “The Babe, the Boy and the Ball” which aired in February 2016. The story featured Babe Ruth, Len Youngman and the homerun ball that was caught at Sleepy Eye Baseball Park in 1922 when Ruth made his famous visit.
Local baseball enthusiasts Dean Brinkman, Randy Krzmarzick and Scott Surprenant, who were all instrumental in making the story happen, made a visit to KARE 11 on January 7th to pick up the hardware. After touring the TV station, the trio headed north. The Emmy was handed over to Len, the boy in the feature. Youngman, now 105 years young, enjoyed the special award overnight before it was brought back to Sleepy Eye.
Friday (2/17) was the official handing over of the cherished hardware for permanent loan to the Depot. It will now sit in the Baseball section below the famous Babe Ruth Visit to Sleepy Eye photo.
