Boyd Huppert’s, KARE 11’s weekly “Land of 10,000 Stories” segment, 100th Emmy of his famous journalism career has arrived at the Sleepy Eye Depot Museum and will now be permanently displayed at our local history center.
The Emmy, awarded by the National Academy of Television Arts, was earned for Huppert’s feature called the “The Babe, the Boy and the Ball” which aired in February 2016. The story featured Babe Ruth, Len Youngman and the homerun ball that was caught at Sleepy Eye Baseball Park in 1922 when Ruth made his famous visit.
Local baseball enthusiasts Dean Brinkman, Randy Krzmarzick and Scott Surprenant, who were all instrumental in making the story happen, made a visit to KARE 11 on January 7th to pick up the hardware. After touring the TV station, the trio headed north. The Emmy was handed over to Len, the boy in the feature. Youngman, now 105 years young, enjoyed the special award overnight before it was brought back to Sleepy Eye.
Friday (2/17) was the official handing over of the cherished hardware for permanent loan to the Depot. It will now sit in the Baseball section below the famous Babe Ruth Visit to Sleepy Eye photo.
Former Sleepy Eye resident, Javier Olvera, 22, was stabbed to death in Donna, Texas January 15.
According to authorities Javier was found found stabbed around 10 p.m., He later died from his injuries. Three of the four suspects have been apprehended.
Javier’s parents, Viviana Rivera and Javier Olvera Sr., still reside in Sleepy Eye.
Joel Youngman, the grandson of the boy peeking from behind Bob Muesel in the famous Babe Ruth visit to Sleepy Eye photo taken in 1922, will be making a trip to Sleepy Eye. Friday August 26th, Joel will help the community dedicate the new Babe Ruth Visit signage which was added to the local baseball park this summer.
The elderly Youngman is still alive living in Virginia, MN. He is now 105 years-old but no longer travels.
Joel will be touring Sleepy Eye Friday afternoon before heading to the Sleepy Eye BaseBall Park for the dedication at 4:30 p.m. The community is invited to attend the ceremony.
This year’s annual Sleepy Eye ornament will feature the Babe Ruth visit.
The “boy” (Len Youngman) was featured in recent KARE 11 and KEYC-TV stories as well as a Weeds column by Randy Krzmarzick.

In a letter to Chamber members Tuesday morning, the Sleepy Eye Chamber Board Members announced Christina Andres has been hired to replace outgoing director Trista Barka.
The Sleepy Eye Chamber Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Christina Andres as the new Executive Director of the Sleepy Eye Area Chamber of Commerce. Christina will assume her new role as director on June 13, 2016.
Christina has experience in education, family and child development, sales, non-profits and technology. As a Sleepy Eye native and resident of the community for 30+ years, she is both familiar and passionate about Sleepy Eye’s history and ever-changing landscape. We are confident her skills, experiences and enthusiasm for Sleepy Eye will be a great asset to the Chamber of Commerce.
Beginning on June 13, Christina will join current Chamber Director Trista Barka at the Chamber of Commerce. Both Trista and Christina will assume Chamber duties until Trista’s maternity leave. As a Board of Directors, we believe this should allow for a smooth, seamless transition. In order to ensure ease of communication during this period, Trista will remain the primary contact for Chamber events (i.e. Party in the Park, Music in the Park, Buttered Corn Days, Business to Business Luncheons, Chamber Golf Tournament, Lunch and Learns, etc.) As in the past, Trista can be reached at chamberdir@sleepyeyetel.net and 507-794-4731. We will provide you with Christina’s contact information once she begins. In addition, we will inform you when Trista’s leave is in effect.
Please stay tuned for information regarding a Welcome/Farewell event for Christina and Trista. We look forward to officially welcoming Christina and giving Trista our many thanks, well wishes and goodbyes.
Please feel free to reach out to your board of directors with any questions or concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
Sleepy Eye Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors
Councilwoman, lifetime Sleepy Eye resident and longtime community advocate Judy Beech died July 28th at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester from a rare blood disease.
Judy has been active in the community her entire life including serving as a past Chamber Director and currently as a councilwoman. She was especially dedicated to her church (Trinity Lutheran Church) where she was a Sunday School teacher and confirmation mentor for a decades.
Sleepy Eye Chamber Director, Trista Barka, perhaps summed it up best, “Judy was an amazing person and a Sleepy Eye treasure.”
Quote from Judy’s obituary
“Her passion for the City of Sleepy Eye was boundless. A fourth generation descendant of one of the city founders, she worked tirelessly to learn and teach the history of Sleepy Eye and promote its advancement. She was a current member of the city council, the economic development board, the Sleepy Eye Area Historical Society, Brown County Historical Society, and the Old Sleepy Eye Collector’s Club of America.”
