Jody Hansen, daughter of Linda and Craig, was crowned the 2018 Miss Sleepy Eye at a coronation held for the first time at the Sleepy Eye Event Center.
Brianna Polesky (parents Carol and Brian) and Courtney Dittbenner (Joleen and Craig) were honored with the Princess crowns.
Abby Johnson earned the Candidates Scholarship. Abby also received special recognition for selling the most tickets.
Lauren Laffen was master of ceremonies at the event. She was joined at the mic by guest speakers Mayor Wayne Pelzel, former Miss Sleepy Eye and Aquatennial Queen Amanda Murphy, and 2017 Miss Sleepy Eye Courtney Engholm.
*Karlie Ries is not a member of the state bound hockey team as she is currently competing at the Hockey Training Institute located in Mulmur, Ontario, Canada
*Dani Weiss, Lauren Klein and Ali Beltz will be finishing off their senior hockey season at the state tournament after winning the Section 2A championship.
The Sleepy Eye Schools Education Association honored Darla Remus as this year’s recipient of the Friends of Education Award.
Darla was nominated because of her strong support of the school including the sports booster programs. She has also been a school board member including chairman for several years.
Teacher, coach and athletic director Cory Haala along with teacher and coach Kris Bloedel both spoke highly of all she has contributed to making their jobs easier. (View above video)
Darla’s dad, Mel Cook, and uncle Duke Cook, received the same honor in 2013. Other previous winners include Arneson Distributing, Dave Vosbeck and Julia Coulson.
The day came a couple of months later than expected, but just the same, it came. MNDOT arrived in Sleepy Eye Monday morning (8/7) to remove the stoplights at the intersection of First Avenue / Main St. The equipment will be replaced with First Avenue stop signs and a pedestrian crossing. Vehicles on Main Street will now only be required to stop if people are crossing the street. The project was scheduled to be completed in May but was delayed due to the arrival of necessary equipment.
St. Mary’s graduate Steve Hoffmann was inducted into the Minnesota Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place at the association’s annual banquet held June 11th in Mankato following the state softball tournament.
Hoffmann is a longtime coach at Minnewask Area. He earned his 500th win in early May.
Hoffmann is th son of Fritz (Frederick) and Berndette and brother to St. Mary’s elementary principle Mary Gangelhoff.

Helget was a player for the Essig Bluejays, batting .311 with 902 hits in 800 career games in 28 seasons (1988-2015). In 904 innings pitched, He had 871 strikeouts and had a 2.96 career ERA.
As an umpire, Helget has worked numerous levels of baseball from high school to Division I in college.
Helget currently serves as the secretary and treasurer for the Tomahawk East League.
