Sleepy Eye United girls track sprinters Nikki Carr, Courtney Schmitt, Jessica Schmitz and Jamie Marti have been beating the pack for most of the season in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. Saturday at the Section 2A meet the girls saved their best performance for when it mattered the most. The quartet punched tickets to the state meet in both events.
The girls teamed to win the 4×200 relay (1:45.87), setting a personal best and falling just .13 short of the section record.
The same group of girls ran the 4×100 event and courtesy of a rule change this season, they also qualified for the state meet with a second place finish. (previously only section champions advanced to state) Their time of 51.06 broke the school record of 51.09.
The SEU girls track team has a long history of strong relay teams. The 4×200 team won the state championship in 2005. Nikki’s sister Jaci Carr (Krueger), who is now a coach on the squad, was a member of the team as was Amanda Schmitz, sister of Jessica. Allie Renberg and Charlotte McMullen were the other two members of the championship team. Jordyn Rathman and Maria Saenz were the team’s alternates.
This year’s alternates include Mariah Salfer and Becca Schmitz (Jessica and Amanda’s younger sister)
Good Luck girls – Sleepy Eye ONLINE is sure there is enough room to add your “name” to the signage that sits at the intersection of Hwy 4 and 14.
