Press release 5/16/13
A trip to Target Center is scheduled for Thursday, June 20 for a 12:10 game with the Chicago White Sox. Seats are in the Home Run Porch Terrace. Sign up is needed by May 24.
The last June outing is to Valleyfair on Tuesday, June 25. The school bus would leave at 8 a.m. and return by 9 p.m. Children ages 6th grade and younger need to be accompanied by an adult. Registration is needed by June 19.
A reservation was made for the Church Basement Ladies in “The Last (Potluck) Supper”. We will be going on Thursday, September 5 for a 1 p.m. matinee. It is 1979, the day of the church’s Centennial Celebration, and past parishioners have gathered to share hot dish, bars and stories from the last 100 years. As the women work in the kitchen, these shared memories burst into life through a series of flashbacks. As they time-jump thru a century, these ladies manage to serve up a rib-tickling panorama of the changes in the kitchen, without spilling a drop of their egg coffee! Sign-up will be needed by August 29.
Summer plans also include trips to the Minnesota State Fair and Clay County Fair. We did receive a call that the Old Log Theatre had been sold and would not be producing a play until October so our June outing is canceled.
The first youth summer activity will be golf lessons on Fridays beginning May 24 for three weeks. The week of June 3rd will find staff from Prairie Fire Children’s Theater working with youth 7 years and older to present “Robin Hood” by the end of the week. Other youth activities offered will be held in July and include Babysitting Clinic, Quilt in a Day and Lego Design I and II.
The ECFE book wagon will return on Thursdays in June to South Park, 9:30-10:15 a.m.. and Keifer Park, 10:30-11:15 a.m. Due to a R.E.A.D. grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, each family attending will receive a book each week.
Other grants received recently include the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council grant for “Robin Hood” and a Book Start grant for ECFE next fall.

One of the popular summer activities for our youngest members of the community is the Book Wagon that visits two of our city parks during the month of June. The first stop will be at South Park 9:30-10:15 and then to Keifer Park 10:30-11:15. This year, each family will be receiving a book to take home due to a R.E.A.D. (Reading Encourages Academic Development) Grant that was received from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation. Families with preschoolers and day care providers are invited to join ECFE on Thursday beginning June 6 for this special event.
Another highlight for children in our School Readiness program is their graduation scheduled for Tuesday, May 7 during their class time. It is not the end of their year but many families have arranged to take time off from work or invited grandparents to come so we are keeping graduation day as scheduled. The children will continue with classes until May 16 in order to make up all the days they missed during the year.
Registration for summer youth activities will take place on Monday, May 13, 5-6:30 p.m. in the Sleepy Eye School Cafeteria. This includes all things offered by Sleepy Eye Aquatic Center, Sleepy Eye Park and Recreation, Brown County Extension and Sleepy Eye Community Education. It is a one stop event which allows people to schedule the summer for their children. Information will be provided for families by the end of the week and it will also be posted on the school website early next week. Bring your calendars and checkbooks/money orders or cash in order to complete registration.
School will be ending in a couple of weeks for students in the district. Behind the wheel instruction is planned for after school the next three weeks and then full six hours days by the end of the month. Schedules will be available soon.

“Why Say Yes to No?” is a book discussion that will be held in Sleepy Eye on Tuesdays, beginning February 19 for three sessions. The time is 6-7:30 p.m. and the place is the Sleepy Eye High School Media Center. The discussion is based on the book of the same titles by psychologist Dr. David Walsh.
Learning how and when to say no is critical for our children’s success in school and life. With an average of 44.5 hours of screen time a week – the most significant lifestyle change for our children over the last decade – kids are exposed to over one million Yes messages a year. This constant barrage of yes messages undermine the crucial character traits children need for success, including self-reliance, perseverance, integrity and the ability to delay gratification. The social and economic ramifications of this shift cannot be ignored. Research shows that self-discipline is twice as strong a predicator of school success as is intelligence. Our kids may be as smart as ever, but a culture of More, Easy, Fast and Fun” is undermining what really counts in the classroom and in helping our children to become thriving, responsible adults.
A series of workshops for parents and child care providers will start on Monday, February 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Sleepy Eye School Lindahl Room. A new offering was a Just for Kids four week session in August and September.
The Wanda Gag Association is offering a number of workshops throughout the county this summer. There is a need for Pick a path instructor which will include making a game and storage box for games that were used during the era of Wanda Gag. The other class in town is Click Click Digital Photography. Springfield will be hosting Sue Sew and Sew and New Ulm is having Bohemian Story Telling.
It is rewarding to see all of the offerings provided for the youth during the summer in our small community. That is a tribute to those providing the different activities.

Summer behind the wheel will begin on Monday, April 30 for youth not involved in spring activities. The June schedule will be completed when all youth needing behind the wheel submit the times they will not be available. It is much easier to make a schedule knowing the conflicts there may be rather than rearrange everyone later. Of course, it is nice to have that permit when one is scheduled as well.
Once the April calendar sheet is turned, there will only be twelve days of school left for Sleepy Eye and St John’s students with the last student day on May 16. St. Mary’s students go until May 23. A few offerings are still on the spring schedule:

A very foggy morning did not deter those wanting to take advantage of the blood draws at Community Health Day. Over 320 people came through in four hours with 100 of them being walk-ins. Many are able to stay for refreshments provided by the Brown County REA and visit with their neighbors. Since there were a few other events in the county, some of the display people were unable to be at more than one event but those who did come made some positive visits with participants. For anyone who missed our event, there will be one in Morgan in May.
It is not too early to think about our April outings. At this time the April 11th trip to the Church Basement Ladies is full but there is always a chance someone can’t go at the last minute so a waiting list has been started.
The outing to the Amish at Harmony on Thursday, April 26 is already half full. There has also been some interest in the trip to the Tulip Festival at Orange City IA on Thursday, May 17.
