Retirement reception set for June 27
MANKATO, Minn. – James Swanson, district engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in Mankato, will retire in July with 44 years of service.
A reception will take place on Wednesday, June 27, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the new MnDOT headquarters, 2151 Bassett Drive, Mankato. A brief program is set for 4:30 p.m.
Swanson has been the district engineer in Mankato from 1993 to 1999 and again from 2003 to present. The Mankato MnDOT headquarters, along with the Windom office, oversees the state transportation system in 13 counties in south central and southwestern Minnesota. Under Swanson’s leadership, the district has made significant improvements to major corridors including Highway 169, Highway 14 and Highway 60. He was also instrumental in starting the Mankato Area Transportation Partnership, which coordinates and guides the vision for transportation in the Mankato area.
Swanson also was assistant commissioner and assistant chief engineer at MnDOT’s Central Office in St. Paul from 1999 to 2003.
A long-time MnDOT employee, Swanson began his career as a highway technician in St. Paul in 1968. He worked in several engineering positions in construction and program delivery over the years in the Twin Cities Metro area and in Mankato.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota and a native of Maynard, Swanson and his wife, Arlene, continue to reside in Mankato where they raised their three children and now have four grandchildren.
MnDOT is currently in the process of filling the district engineer position in Mankato.
