Hector Monges, Director of Migrant Education for the country of Mexico made a visit to the Sleepy Eye Schools Tuesday morning (5/8) to learn about the education process of migrant students in the community. The goal of his visit was to develop a partnership betweenMinnesotaand his community in order to better educate migrant students.

Sleepy Eye along with St. James were the only non-metro schools visited by the group that included Alan Tores, Mexican Consulate in St. Paul, Elia Bruggeman, former SE Principal and current Assistant Commissioner with the Dept. of Education and Noemi Trevino, Education Specialist with the Dept. of Education.

Mexico, along with our local schools, faces similar concerns academically with migrant students, including a reverse problem with migrants coming to their country who don’t speak Spanish or are limited by the language.

“Migrant students lose a lot academically but they gain in other areas,” said Trevino.

It is hoped by becoming better informed about the educational experiences migrant students enjoy in both cultures each group will be able to enhance the learning experiences for all children involved.

Sleepy Eye will be involved in a pilot program this summer with this Bi-National Program that will include bringing a licensed teacher from Mexico to town to co-teach in the Migrant School. This teacher will be hosted by Bev and Ron Petersen.

(Elia Bruggeman clarified that Hector Monges is the Director of Migrant Education for the country of Mexico, not the Secretary of Education for Mexico City which was initially told to SEO staff)

Elia Bruggman, former SEHS principal and current Assistant Commissioner for the Dept. of Education, was also part of the entourage.
