After practicing for weeks prior to competition, the Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter’s CDE team’s hard work paid off at regional competitions this past week. On Tuesday, April 10th, the Nursery and Landscape CDE Team traveled to Southwest Star Concept in Okabena, where they dominated the contest. The team won the competition overall with Josie Fischer leading the way with a first place finish, followed by Kari Schumacher (3rd place) and Michael Sprenger (4th place). The Nursery and Landscape CDE tests students’ skills in all aspects of marketing, maintaining landscape plants and related products, evaluating equipment and services, and landscape design. Also making a state trip for the first time is the Floriculture team, who finished in 7th place. In The Floriculture CDE, students to identify plants, judge flower arrangements solve problems. Participants also demonstrate skills in flower arranging, propagation and preparation of floral and foliage products for sale.
On Friday, April 13, the Dairy Foods, Dairy Judging, and Dairy Handlers all qualified for the state competition. The Dairy Foods placed fifth overall and was led by Katelyn Johnson (10th place). The Diary Judging Team finished with an impressive third. Leading the way was Bethany Seifert (2nd place) and Emily Kjelshus (3rd place). New to the competition this year were Dairy Handlers Mary Rosenhammer and John Mangen. Rosenhammer finished in fourth, followed by Mangen in sixth, which qualifies both of them for the state competition. The Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter will have members competing in 13 Career Development Events, which is the most that has ever participated in several years. The Minnesota FFA State Convention will take place April 22- 24 at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Career Development Events build on what is learned in agricultural classes and encourage members to put their knowledge into practice. These events are designed to help a member prepare for a career in agriculture by testing and challenging the student’s technical, leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills as well as their knowledge of the subject matter.
